Lead Software Engineer

At BAS World, we build digital products that allow customers around the world to buy and sell trucks, machinery and parts. Our platform supports a large part of our international trading processes and is used every day by customers and colleagues around the world.

As a Lead Software Engineer, you not only work on scalable software, but also shape how multiple teams develop and improve our platforms. You are a technical leader without being a formal people manager. You create alignment between teams, promote engineering excellence and help Engineers make better decisions independently. At the same time, you stay close to the technology: you contribute to architecture, complex technical challenges and the continued development of standards and ways of working.

Your impact lies not only in what you build yourself, but above all in what you enable within and beyond your team.

Our IT department is divided into what we call pillars. We have five product pillars: Operations, Parts & Tyres, Buyer, Seller and Platform Engineering. You will work with innovative product teams within one of these pillars. You look beyond a single application or team. Together with Engineers, Product Owners, Engineering Managers, Architects and business colleagues, you translate product ambitions into future-proof technical decisions. You identify dependencies, risks and opportunities early and help teams make decisions that deliver value both today and in the longer term.

What will you do?

• You help define and communicate the technical direction within your product domain.

• You translate product ambitions, architectural decisions, technical risks and dependencies into concrete technical priorities for the roadmap.

• You create alignment between teams and prevent solutions from being designed in isolation.

• You work closely with Engineers, Product Owners, Engineering Managers, Architects and business colleagues.

• You make technical decisions understandable and connect them to customer value, risks and organisational impact.

• You coach Engineers on complex technical challenges and help them grow in ownership and decision-making.

• You take the lead during complex incidents and ensure that structural improvements are actually implemented.

• You actively contribute to knowledge sharing and improving our developer experience.

• You initiate improvements in our ways of working - including our move towards Spec Driven Development and outcome-focused delivery - and encourage teams to experiment with AI, new technologies and modern engineering tools.

Your specifications

When is this role right for you?

This role is a good fit if you combine strong technical expertise with the ability to set direction and bring others along.

• You have extensive experience as a Senior, Staff or Lead Software Engineer.

• You have demonstrably made an impact beyond your own work, application or team.

• You have experience making, substantiating and communicating architectural decisions within complex software environments.

• You think in scalable and maintainable solutions while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity.

• You can translate technical challenges into clear choices for technical and non-technical stakeholders.

• You are willing to challenge existing decisions and propose concrete, well-founded alternatives.

• You act as a coach and sounding board for Engineers and help others make better decisions independently.

• You take responsibility for outcomes, even when multiple teams, systems or stakeholders are involved.

• You work from our Veghel office at least four days a week, because we believe in close collaboration and being able to move quickly.

You also have experience with many of the following areas:

• Cloud-native software development, preferably on AWS;

• APIs and distributed systems;

• CI/CD and automated testing;

• Relational and non-relational databases;

• Modern frontend and backend technologies (PHP, Laravel);

• Software architecture, observability, security and scalability.
